5 Minute Activities to Conquer Your Cabin Fever

Last week, it finally started to sink in that I’ve been inside my house for over an entire year. And that realization honestly just zapped all of the stamina out of me. Feeling a little down, I needed a little pick-me-up to reinvigorate my right brain, so I came up with a few small creative activities to help you recapture your moxie and let your creative spirit roam free.

1. Draw your favorite song

Confession time: I honestly initially didn’t understand the hype around Taylor Swift’s newest music, but for the past three weeks I’ve literally just been rotating between “Folklore,” “Evermore” and “Lover” on Spotify. To any of my Spotify friends who’ve seen my Taylor Swift binge habits showing up on their sidebar, I’m sorry — but also stop what you’re doing right now and go listen to these albums.

Aaaanyway, I was listening to “invisible string” while cleaning and found some blank pieces of paper in my drawer, and that’s where the idea for this exercise came from!

It’s simple: pull up the song (or songs) you’ve had on repeat lately, take out a piece of blank paper and a pen, and just start drawing to the song, anything that comes to mind, letting your subconscious guide you.

2. Engage in some small-space dance improv

Cabin fever has got me continually dreaming of the wide open sprung-floor expanse of the dance studio. But while we wait for that dream to become a reality, explore how much of a story you can tell with small gestures in limited space. If you’re vibing with it, record your improv as a piece of quarantine movement history.

3. Make a creative cover song

Take one of your favorite songs and remix it — try slowing it down or speeding it up and making it your own.  Trust me, it can be super therapeutic.

4. Write a poem for a friend about a memory you share

Something to give you the chance to reminisce and be grateful for all of the good times you’ve had, and something you can share to brighten someone’s day all in one! A true win-win.

5. Unlock your inner interior designer and rearrange one thing in your space

Yes, just one. Remember this is supposed to be a 5-minute reset activity! Not 5 hours! That being said, if you suddenly come up with a master plan to change your entire space to be better for you, go for it. But move one piece of furniture around to give yourself a change in atmosphere in these sometimes monotonous days.
